Friendship Lake Advisory Group (LAG)
Linda Report Advisory Chair
Committee Meeting
October 24, 2024
Advisory group met at 9:00 am on October 20th. Six district committee and property owners attended.
Dann Reske, Nancy Chica, Joe Vassau, Mike Henke, Tim Ramsey, Linda Moonan
Reviewed recently completed plant survey by Land and Water (Point-Intercept Aquatic
Plant Survey). Points covered: Aquatic Invasive Species & their effect on our lake.
Invasives aggressively take advantage of ecosystem disturbances, disrupt food chain,
and degrade habitat & impact fish populations. Eurasian Watermilfoil 80% lake
coverage, Elodea (Common Waterweed) 36% coverage & Coon tail increasing at 27%
Recommendations: Maintain/review healthy riparian corridors around Friendship Lake;
correct excessive nutrient inputs from shoreline erosion (noted in all surveys going back
to 2006); participate in Farmers of the Roche-A-Cri watershed group that works with the
DNR: district and start sampling nutrients entering through watershed beginning in
2025. Dann Reske will be our Famers of the Roche-A-Cri contact for proceeding. Include
efforts to educate lake residents on land use, and how the lake is used that affect water
quality. Compliance with Wisconsin’s Shoreland Protection programs is essential.
Followed DNR requirement of having an independent private company to preform a
study of the weeds present in the lake, including their location, type and coverage. This
action was completed by Cason Land and Water. This step was taken to alleviate any
delay if a chemical treatment plan/or other was to be pursued.
Sec. Pokorny has a copy and is posted on the front page of the website.
Joe Vassau had completed research on a licensed applicator, Tigris Corp, using chemical
applications approved in WI. Ed Aksamit provided research on, Solitude, a licensed lake
management company using a natural approach to shoreline erosion and other water
quality issues. The DNR is agreement with Solitude as a professional company dealing in
natural ecologically sound practices. We will pursue more information and details on
this company for a further report. Land and Water Conservation Grants along with
Surface Water Grants do apply for shoreline erosion/restoration, watershed testing.
All of the above has an effect on, and will be represented in our management plan
update. A meeting with Keifer, Land and Water, will be scheduled for November to
finalize items to be included or enhanced, to provide a comprehensive plan for Friendship Lake.
